The hot summer sun marks the beginning of one of the most highlighted events in the Tennis calendar. Wimbledon is the most anticipated tournament by tennis players and fans all over the world.
The grass court tournament first started in 1877 and became known as Wimbledon due to the location and venue.
This famous championship event lasts for two weeks. It started a week later this year and will run from 29th June to 12th July 2015.
The courts are the focal point of activity with all the paparazzi, cameras, celebrities and the fast actions of the tennis players. Wimbledon will have 19 courts in play this year, this will increase the ground capacity to 39,000.
So what is the twist or a break in tradition? It is set to be one of the hottest tournaments in history so you could be forgiven for thinking that the slim chances of umbrellas being at the ready is what we are gearing up to revealing but no, English wine is to be served at Wimbledon this year for the first time since the tournament began 138 years ago.
The chosen wine for the two week prestigious tournament which opened on Monday (29 June 2015), is a White Pinot Gris 2014 from the Bolney Estate in East Sussex.
The Bolney Estate website describes the new addition to Wimbledon as:
“Made from 100% Pinot Gris Grapes. A dry wine, fragrant aroma of rose, jasmine and conference pears which follows through into the palette with a wonderful richness and slightly honeyed character. The wine has a lovely creamy freshness about it”.The Bolney Estate
A perfect complement to strawberries and cream and champagne.
If you are one of the lucky ones attending Wimbledon this year, please do enjoy the Champagne, strawberries and cream and the new addition the Pinot Gris. However, do bear in mind if you consume alcohol booking your taxi back home should also be on your agenda or you could find yourself frequenting a very different court to the grass courts of Wimbledon!
