As the domestic and European football seasons draw to a close, now is an appropriate time to consider how and why so many of us equate watching football with having a drink or two. It is common practice for football fans to either flock to their local pub to watch a big game or over-indulge at the stadium (prior to kick-off and during half time of course).
The Champions League semi-finals are upon us in May as Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus and Bayern Munch will all compete for a place in the final which takes place at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.

Not only is Germany the newly established powerhouse in world football but it is also considered by many as the beer capital of Europe. Regardless of which two teams will progress to Berlin, it is a certainty that people all over the world will be watching the final intently and enjoying a few beers whilst they do so. Those traveling to Berlin for the final that are planning on hiring a car when they arrive should be forewarned that the prescribed limit for drink driving in Germany differs greatly to the legal limit in England and Wales. Here you can legally drive as long as your blood alcohol level does not exceed 80 milligrams per 100 milliliters of breath, whereas in Germany the prescribed limit is 50 milligrams per 100 ml of breath. It is as low as 30mg/100ml if you have been involved in an accident.

Anyone who sits down to watch any Champions League fixture will be assaulted with countless adverts numerous products and services, namely alcoholic drinks. In fact football is so synonymous with alcohol that during the 2006 World Cup in Germany it was estimated that England fans drank an average of 17 PINTS EACH during their time in the country. That was the year that England were once again subject to the standard quarter-final penalty shootout knockout. Who knows what the average consumption would have been had we somehow managed to progress to the final that year!

If you are one of the many people that will be watching the Champions League final at your local pub it is always worth bearing in mind there is no definitive amount of alcohol that will tip you over the limit. Everyone is different and it is advisable if you plan on having an extra pint should the game go to extra time then a taxi home is more advisable than getting in your car and driving home after the match has finished.
