The Department for Transport have announced that vehicle owners will be granted MOT exemption in light of the lockdown due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
The temporary exemption has been granted to allow vital services to continue, frontline workers to get to work and for people to get essential food and medicine.
Exemption
All cars, vans and motorcycles which would usually require an MOT test will be exempt from the test requirements from 30 March 2020. The exemption will last for six months.
So long as you are not self-isolating or extremely vulnerable, the Government advice is to book you MOT test if it is due up to and including 29 March 2020.
You must not take your vehicle for its MOT if you or someone you live with has coronavirus symptoms, or if you are categorised as extremely vulnerable.
You should only get your vehicles MOT done if you need to use it for:
- Shopping for basic essentials;
- For any medical need;
- To travel to work purposes or if you use your vehicle in the course of your work.
- The MOT centre will not provide a paper copy of your MOT certificate in a bid to help prevent the spread of coronavirus.
If your vehicle tax is due to run out before you get an MOT, you must register your vehicle as off the road if:
- Your MOT is due to run out (or has already);
- Your vehicle tax is due to run out;
- You’re not able to get your vehicle tested because you are self-isolating.
Car Safety
Whilst the rules have been relaxed regarding MOTs, it is imperative that vehicles must be kept in a roadworthy condition. Garages will remain open during the UK lockdown, however this is likely to be for essential repair work only.
Drivers can however, still be prosecuted for driving unsafe vehicles, which may lead to a charge of careless driving or, in certain circumstances, dangerous driving.
